Swim England is aware that athletes on the pathway are coming forward indicating they have mental health issues. Results from the British Swimming central screening show that the prevalence of mental health issues in elite swimmers are in keeping with that of the general population. This means that up to 20% of swimmers may have issues with mental health.

This year’s Swim England South West Region’s Inter-County Water Polo Tournament was held over two days at Millfield Pool in Street, with all six counties from the region being involved, and over 39 games of water polo were played over the two days.

Devon came 1st overall out of 20 county teams. This was Devon first – ever National County Team Championships crown, which ended Yorkshire’s three year streak. After finishing 3rd 12 months ago, and runners up in 2017, Devon finally got their hands on the top prize.

The World Para Swimming Allianz Championships took place the 9th – 15th September, which was not only the World Championships but also a key qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The event was held at the London Aquatics Centre, which saw 600 swimmers from around 60 different countries compete across various events.

Team Bath AS and Millfield School will begin a new partnership this season that will see the teams running joint Open Meets for the foreseeable future. Together the two teams will be hosting a series of Open Meets providing a focused program that gives competition opportunities for swimmers at key times of the year and within essential qualification windows.

The National Skills in Plymouth took place on 6/7th July, with a total of 255 entrants from as far away as Dubai! We had participants from all around Great Britain such as Dublin, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Aberdare.

Earlier this year, Swim England launched the Coaching and Teaching register. After our analysis, we have noticed that some club submissions show that some teachers and coaches either have no DBS check registered or have one which is more than 3 years old, therefore may not be compliant with Swim England’s Child Safeguarding Policies and Procedures, Wavepower.

Team Bath AS are advertising a series of pre-season clinics for competitive swimmers over four days in August (24th to 28th), at the University of Bath, giving 9-16 year old swimmers the change to hone skills, technique and technical knowledge in time for the 2019/2020 season. As part of the Swim England approach to recruiting, training and recognising volunteers, we are encouraging clubs to adopt the volunteer coordinator model. A volunteer coordinator is essentially the people manager of your club. They act as the main point of contact for all club volunteers and provide a key support role to clubs in the management and development of its volunteers.

The three Wiltshire para boys were at it again at the National championships held in Liverpool over the weekend 2/3 March. Matthew Davies from Clear Water Congers and Ethan Dent and Aiden Stanbrook from Durrington Otters all travelled to Liverpool to attend the Championships and between them came away with an impressive 2 Bronze Medals, three Silver Medals and a Gold Medal.

Team Bath AS raised over £700 for Comic Relief on Friday as swimmers, coaches and parents came together in the ‘Bags of Fun’ Relay event for Red Nose Day. Four teams headed by coaches, Chris Alderton, Mike Mukelt, Liam Willcox and former GB swimmer and TM Tilly Gray went head to head in a tactically challenging race that involved racing with mystery items extracted from the Bags of Fun just before the whistle. The Regional Coach Conference - Coaching Generation Z will take place on Sunday 17th March at the Holiday Inn Taunton. Throughout the day there will be workshops on the Optimal Athlete Development Framework, Club Awards, Talent Across the Ages, Growth and Development of Age Group swimmers with motor learning skills and planning considerations.

This is an exciting opportunity for a level two or three qualified swim coach to join Durrington Swimming clubs dedicated coaching team. Based near Salisbury, Durrington Otters are a motivated and positive swimming club consisting of 48 swimmers from ASA level 6 through to regional competitors. The SwimMark accredited club train four evenings a week in a four lane pool.

The South West Masters Development Day took place on 13th January at the University of Bath. The swimmers were able to make the most of the magnificent facilities in the Sports Training village as the programme consisted of two pool sessions, classroom sessions and yoga/strength and conditioning.
